Guggenheim, Mori to honor silver fox in Tokyo

NEW YORK: Tuesday, March 15, 2005

Armani’s at it again.

It seemed like only yesterday that Giorgio Armani landed in New York for a week’s worth of events, including, among others, a book signing at Bergdorf’s that brought out Glenn Close, a restaging of his spring/summer fashion show at Pier 59, and serving as the guest of honor at Fashion Group International’s annual black-tie gala. Now he’s headed to Asia.

First he’ll visit Japan and then South Korea. On March 31, he’ll make a personal appearance at a to-be-decided department store where he will sign copies of the official Mori Art Museum/Solomon R. Guggenheim exhibition catalogue. In addition, Istean, Mitsukoshi, Takashimaya, and Seibu will all display special window installations recognizing Armani’s visit to Tokyo. From there, Armani will receive the Fashion Editors Club of Japan’s Designer of the Year award. The cocktail reception, to be held at the Akasaka Prince Hotel, is expected to host 600 fashion industry guests.

On April 1, Armani will be on hand to celebrate the opening of the Solomon R. Guggenheim’s Giorgio Armani exhibition at Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum. “It is a great honor to have the Guggenheim’s exhibition of my work presented by the Mori Art Museum,†the designer said in a statement. “Japan, its culture, and spirit, have been a constant personal inspiration. I am particularly looking forward to this trip as both the Japanese and South Koreans have such a keen interest in and enthusiasm for fashion.†Following the reception, there will be a celebratory party in the Tokyo City View on the 52nd floor of the Mori building.

Earlier on that same evening, Armani will present his fall/winter men’s and women’s collections during a fashion show for 1,600 guests in front of Tokyo’s Kaigakan museum that will be broadcast live on the Shibuya Q’s Eye outdoor mega screen. Armani’s first couture collection, Privé, will serve as the finale to the show. And as if that weren’t enough for one day, Armani will also be on hand for the ribbon-cutting for his first Armani Casa store at HH Style, a home furnishings retail outlet.

Following a night of celebration, Armani will arrive in South Korea on April 2—his first-ever visit to the country—where he will be toasted at a VIP cocktail reception hosted by the Shinsegae International, the Armani Group’s business partner of the last fifteen years.
