Relax! It's Good Advice for Your Skin

Discover the connection between a calm mind and a better complexion

Even just a few minutes of uninterrupted time to relax can do wonders for your mental health. Now, recent studies are starting to back up suspected connections between stress and acne as well as stress and wrinkles.

Emotional stress doesn't cause acne, but it can trigger outbreaks in some women by changing hormone levels and increasing oil gland secretion. If you notice that your complexion tends to get worse during emotionally difficult times, take it as a sign that it's time to unwind—by exercising more, working less, and practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.

What about wrinkles? George Murphy, MD, professor of dermatology and pathology at the University of Pennsylvania, has found that tension can affect cells located beneath the skin surface resulting in a decrease in elasticity and deeper facial lines.

While the research is ongoing, it's always good advice to take time to pamper yourself. After all, there's nothing more beautiful than feeling calm and relaxed.
