You don't need a code to get a LJ anymore. Just go and sign up!
If you want to join a community, you find the community you want to join (by searching interestes or something), then go to the user page and click the "join community" link! It's really simple!

Friends only means that you decide who gets to see it. So, if you want it to be a completely private yournal, you can make it that way.
