Makeup and Hair Trends for Fall 2004

Summer may have been sexy, but this fall is feminine, with a retro

1920s- and 1980s-inspired glam revival. Even if you're back to

business with tailored suits, you'll want your makeup feminine and

your hair wavy, says New York City makeup artist and style expert

Tyrone Traylor. Here, he gives you the lowdown on what you need to

know for an ultrachic and elegant fall look.

Foundations Rule: Use multiple foundation shades to create shape and

contour. Highlight the T-zone with a shade of foundation that's

slightly lighter than your skin tone, then use a shade that matches

your skin tone to fill in the rest of your face. Add shape by applying

a slightly darker shade on either side of your nose and on the

undersides of your cheekbones. This will make your cheeks and eyes

pop. Remember to always apply very small amounts of foundation at a

time and always gently press it into your skin with a sponge to blend.

You want your skin to glow through; you don't want to create a mask.

Lighter Lips: Kiss those summer pinks and blue-based reds goodbye.

Matte is out too. This fall, it's coral, russet and deep sunset tones

for your lips and cheeks. Glosses and creamy lip colors will keep your

look soft (and also help keep dry lips moist.) Feminine is the trend,

not flashy -- so pick muted hues that don't scream for attention.

Lots of Mascara: Long, lush eyelashes not only frame your eyes but

draw attention to them! To super-enhance lashes, pair a pale shadow

color, like icy blue, with lots of mascara on your upper lashes. Full,

thick lashes contrast nicely with light, muted eye shadow and are an

easy step to adding glamour to your overall look.

Keep It Curly: If you have naturally curly or wavy hair, this is your

time to shine. Put away the flatiron; long stick-straight hair is out.

Shiny, controlled waves are coming back this fall, in

just-below-the-shoulder lengths. As for the part, opt for one that

falls in the middle or slightly to the side. Think 1940s pinup girl,

which is what inspired the 1980s retro look. Go natural as far as

possible and use only enough product to make your hair do what it does

best. If you have straight hair, you can build in some wave: To

maximize hair texture, spritz wet hair with volumizing spray and pull

it back into a ponytail, looping it around your finger. Pin the knot

you've created, let it dry naturally, then simply unpin it. If you

have curly hair, the perfect tousled look is easy: Curls only need a

shampoo and a spritz of hair spray (to help avoid frizz). When

choosing hair color, keep it warm. Look for nutty brown and chestnut

shades with caramel, gold or amber highlights.

Nude Nails: This fall, hands are elegant and understated -- perfectly

groomed with just the sheerest touch of pink or beige on the nails.

These nude shades actually make your fingers appear longer. If you're

craving color, go for taupe or coral hues. And keep the shape squared

at the top. <script><!-- D(["mb","falls in the middle or slightly to the side. Think 1940s pinup girl,

Now I'm a smoker but he is a gross smoker. He will take a ciggarette into the shower with him, I usually find them extinguished in the soap holder! One of these days I'll take a picture and post it. *Gawd, he'd kill me* LOL
