The Return of Spring

By Erin Williams</B>

In Greek mythology, there is a girl called Persephone. One day, Persephone gets swallowed into the earth and her mother Demeter is so sad and angry that she makes everything barren and dry. Only then, Zeus, Persephone’s father, sends someone down to Hades to get his daughter. Because she ate pomegranate seeds in the underworld, Persephone has to return there every year, and thus, we have winter. When she comes back to her mother, spring returns. Mythology lesson over! But know that Persephone is on her climb back up, so you’ll need to shake off those snow flurries away and check out these new goodies from your favorite lines in preparation for Spring.

Inspired by the sheer hues in watercolor paintings, Laura Mercier’s Spring Collection is a gathering of soft colors that can quickly turn your face into a work of art. They’re a safe way to introduce color into your makeup palette if the idea of blue eye shadow sends you running for the hills, or Hades. Try the Azure Eye Color Duo – a deep teal and pale icy blue. For a more earth-tone choice, go for the Moss Eye Color Duo with its hunter and sea-foam green combo. For a bolder finish, try the shadow eyeliners. Eggplant is a nice color to spruce up any look and give a little extra definition (www.lauramercier.com).

If you’re in search of a lipcolor that will truly stay put, check out Chanel’s new Ultra Wear Lip Colors. With a pigmented stain on one side and a clear, non-tacky gloss on the other, these are great for all day wear that won’t clump up on your lips or fade into the sunset. Sandstone is a good peachy brown and Rose Quartz is a nice pinky brown for all the neutral girls out there (www.chanel.com).

For the fans of Benefit’s Benetint, a rosy cheek and lip stain, they’ve come out with a new trove called Jewels of the Amazon. Think liquid, sheer, shimmering eye or cheek and lip glimmers. Gimmie an Outside Vine is a beautiful bronze wash that can look pretty by itself or as a base to something else, while Throw Me a Vine is a golden mauve that’s perfect for highlighting the cheeks (www.benefitcosmetics.com).

Although they have a wide range of colors, Nars is generally known for their edgy looks. But this season has been deemed “After Glow†and it shows a softer side. The infamous Orgasm blush has been developed into a lipgloss and joins fellow newcomer Pillow Talk – a creamy sheer pink. Light beige-y rose and sheer honey make up the Windstar Shadow Duo (much cuter than the van that it makes me think of) while the Wicked Shadow Duo reminds one of the Broadway show with its soft and intense shades of citron. Good pigments make this line an excellent choice (www.narscosmetics.com).

The new colors from Sisley are universally flattering and feel soft and smooth. The three new shades of Hydrating Long Lasting Lipsticks, L19, L20 and L21, give a natural look if you smudge a bit and rub it into the lips as a stain or can be more intense if given a couple of layers. And the new blush! Did I tell you that my favorite blush color is cotton candy pink? Phyto Blush Eclat in Pinky Rose is a combination of that and a soft light highlighting pink. The result is freshly flushed cheeks and a youthful appearance (www.sisley-cosmetics.com).

Now, for intensity, MAC has a whole color story inspired by “Madame Butterfly,†aptly named Puccini’s Madame B. Flitter is an amazing strong violet eye shadow with a red and gold pearl luster that’s perfect for adding a pop of color. Pollen eye shadow is a yellow-white frost that’s perfect to open up the eye or as to highlight under the browbone. For a healthy shine, Angelwing Lusterglass is a stunning plum with a golden pearly sheen – a great sheer on fair skin that can be amped up on deeper skin tones (www.maccosmetics.com).

Christian Dior’s spring palette is bold and bright. Remember the movie poster with those sunglasses and that lollipop? Yes, Lolita. In eyeliners, Pacific Blue, a strong aqua, and Anise, a celery green, are perfect for giving the eye an extra bit of drama. The watermelon shadow shades of Exquis, a baby pink, and Tropic, an apple green, are beautiful as a wash on fair skin (pink on the lid, green in the crease) and perfect for bringing out the warmth in deeper skin-tones. In the Limited Edition Kisses, Tasty Gloss Treats in Candy Apple with three pocket-sized glosses and a silver “D†charm shine like glass and guarantee attention (www.nordstrom.com).

So, unearth yourself from the chains of winter and unleash your inner spring goddess. There are many options out there to help you catch a hellion of your own this spring.
